先日、家内の実家で田植えの手伝いをしてきました。
義父も高齢になってきてので今年から稲作の手伝いを始めたというわけです。
とは言え、日頃肉体労働になれていない私がはたして田植えのお手伝いができるのだろうかと最初はとても心配でした。
しかし、やってみると田植えは実に楽な作業だったです。
というのも最近買い換えた田植機の性能が抜群で、今まで田んぼに入っていやっていた地ならし作業もなくなり、お手伝いしたことといえば苗や肥料を田植機に運ぶくらいで、後は田植機を操縦している義父を見守っているだけで田植えは終了してしまいました。
まわりの田んぼを見ても、どこも少人数で田植えをやっていました。一家総出で田植えをやるという光景はもはや過去の話のようです。田んぼの規模にかかわらず、どこも田植機ですいすい田植えをしています。
高齢化が進む農家ではこういった最新鋭の農業機械が農作業を支えているとう現実がよく分かりました。
しかし、ここで考えなければならないことは太陽エネルギーで育つ稲に対して、農作業自体は多くを石油エネルギーに依存しているということです。
これではもし石油がなくなってしまえば、農作業は人力でやるしかなくなり農業生産はストップしてしまうことでしょう。
石油枯渇時代の到来に備えて農業機械の脱石油化こそ最優先で進めるべきではないだろうかと、そんなことを田植えを手伝いながら考えました。

田んぼの中は慣れないとぬかるみますから大変です。
省力化を図る意味でもまさに機械が活躍します。
機械の威力は、むしろ収穫時でまざまざと見せつけられることでしょう。
