先日のアイスランド火山噴火に伴い、「火山灰による寒冷化」という事態を想定しておく必要が出て来ました。
経営者たるものは「希望的観測という視点はとらず、最低最悪の環境を想定して計画を立てる」心構えが大切です。
寒冷化した気候、そして石油が枯渇する現実。実に嫌なカップリングではありますが、これらが複合して発生すると農業分野ではどうなるかを連載コラムとして考え、取り上げていきたいと思います。
1)「寒冷化」ー 子ども達からの叫び声
北海道は十勝南部・大樹町には「光地園」という、800ha以上もある放牧地があります。

写真を観る限り、とてものどかで素敵な風景です。
しかし、ここにはかつて、昭和３０年代に開拓団で入って来た「光地園集落」が存在した、ときくとどうでしょう？
何故その集落は無くなったのでしょうか？
寒冷化が進行すると、このような事例が至る所で発生することが想像に難くありません。
また、写真にあるように収穫時の積雪や寒にあたってしまい、数ヶ月かけて栽培したせっかくの作物が一気にパーになる確率が急上昇します（つまり食糧不足が発生しやすい、ということです）。

上述の詩の「意思は堅い」という"希望的観測"は、連続して発生した「冷害」という冷徹な現実の前に脆くも崩れさりました。

北海道十勝地方は小豆の産地として良く知られています。小豆は、豆を乾燥させてから脱穀しますので、乾燥させるために写真のように積み重ねます（これを「ニオ」といいます）。"乾燥途上でドカ雪が降る＝小豆が腐ってしまう"ことを意味します

今年*も北海道は「冷害」である。冷害のたびに為政者の声が氾濫するが、
根本的な対策はなんら為されてはいない。この「冷害」と報道されたる
二字の活字の中には、どれほど幾多の悲劇が含まれていることであろう。
負債の累積による離農、そして自殺者までも...。北海道畑作地帯の中心地
十勝は、三年続きの冷害である。冷害は情け容赦なく農家に襲いかかってくる。
そういった家庭の環境に育つ幼な子供達の心境は、想像するに堪えがたい。
冷害のもっとも悲しい犠牲者は子供達かもしれない。

離農せし廃屋の影ひとつ
サイロの屋根もない
「光り輝く酪農の地」として
ここは、開拓者の魂を無意識に誘っていた
一メートルに及ぶササを刈り
節のごつい木々を一本ずつ伐墾していった
そして今は
この畜産の途をと
黒毛和種に光地園の生命（いのち）をかけたのだ
「日本で一番寒いところ」
そう咳いていた
実り多きを願い
豆を播いたが
度重なる冷害に破れ
「光輝く...」の夢も
多雪呼ぶ雲間に遠ざかる
しかし、開拓魂は続く
この土のある限り
十二キロの山道を
牛乳感を背負っておりたことがあった
ー 肩がその重さに食い込んで足がふらつく ー
乳搾る時
涙がにじんだ
でも、この山麓に我が途をと
意思は堅い
